Impacts of Climate Change on Festivals and Response Strategies

Abstract

This study examines the impacts of climate change on festivals and response strategies.Climate change, which has recently emerged as a threat to festivals, has reached unprecedented levels-surpassing historical trends observed over centuries-marking a pivotal shift in perception from mere 'climate change' to a 'climate crisis.'To address this, the study analyzed domestic and international literature as well as media reports from January 2017 to May 2026 regarding the responses of festival organizers."By investigating the risks climate change poses to festivals and examining the strategies adopted by planners and operators, this study highlights the urgent need for eco-friendly practices.Ultimately, the findings underscore the necessity for governments, local authorities, residents, and participants to establish systematic strategies to address the climate crisis.Consequently, festivals should be designed not merely as entertainment, but as drivers of local economic revitalization that preserve community bonds and identity amidst these environmental challenges.Furthermore, governments must respond to the climate crisis by integrating advanced IT to generate precise weather data-thereby minimizing risks to tourism festivals-and by establishing operational manuals along with eco-friendly standards, such as achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.""Local governments must build governance structures and devise region-specific strategies to ensure environmental sustainability.Lastly, local residents and participants need to establish a cooperative framework to address the climate crisis by actively reducing carbon emissions-thereby enhancing the quality of life for both present and future generations through the promotion of sustainable, eco-friendly festivals.
