Does AI understand palliative care

Integration of generative AI into clinical care makes it more urgent than ever to have a public dialogue about what palliative care really means. Artificial Intelligence (AI) models have great potential to improve access to palliative care, for example by screening health records for indicators of palliative care need, identifying care priorities, or summarising clinical interactions. However, without careful consideration and attention to clarity, use of AI may inadvertently exacerbate existing misconceptions of palliative care.

Abstract

Integration of generative AI into clinical care makes it more urgent than ever to have a public dialogue about what palliative care really means. Artificial Intelligence (AI) models have great potential to improve access to palliative care, for example by screening health records for indicators of palliative care need, identifying care priorities, or summarising clinical interactions. However, without careful consideration and attention to clarity, use of AI may inadvertently exacerbate existing misconceptions of palliative care.
