Making Silent Failures Visible: A Single-Pass Section Reader for Android Bug Reports
Android bug reports bundle the dumps of hundreds of system services and several logs into one text file that can exceed two million lines. A parser of such a file can fail silently: records lost to a misread line, a service dump the platform stopped at its time limit, and a section no parser reads all appear as the same short or empty table. We present a single-pass section reader that enters every section in an index, stores the time limit on each service dump the platform cut short, and passes each section's lines only to its registered parsers, which feed 158 artifacts. On seven real reports from four vendor families (Android 10, 15 and 16), a full run took 20 to 55 s with a peak of at most 585 MB, and raw-text counts and a second, separately implemented parser agreed with the reader on every artifact compared, apart from small, explained differences. Validation exposed the first cause: before a fix, one damaged line reduced 284 packages to 15 without an error. The index separates the other two causes and shows that about 80 percent of the sections of two reports are read by no artifact.
