Home safety and community services gaps for ageing in place for older adults in Hong Kong

Purpose This study aims to examine home safety issues affecting older adults in Hong Kong, identify associated risk factors for falls and injuries, and explore gaps in community services and policy support that hinder effective “ageing in place”. Design/methodology/approach A literature review and analysis of local and international data were conducted, focusing on demographic trends, injury statistics, environmental hazards, and existing community care services. The study also reviewed current gerontechnology applications and policy frameworks to assess their adequacy in addressing home safety challenges. Findings Falls are the predominant cause of injuries among older adults, with risk factors spanning biomedical, behavioural, and environmental domains. Limited living space, inadequate home modifications, and insufficient awareness exacerbate safety risks. Community care services face long waiting times and resource constraints, while gerontechnology adoption is hindered by affordability, usability, and digital literacy barriers. Despite existing initiatives, gaps remain in in-home safety assessments, technology integration, and public education. Originality/value This paper provides a holistic view of home safety for older adults in Hong Kong, integrating environmental, technological, and policy perspectives. It highlights critical service gaps and offers actionable recommendations for enhancing home safety and supporting “ageing in place” through multi-sector collaboration.
