Psychosocial needs of women following hysterectomy for early-stage endometrial cancer: a literature review
Endometrial cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women and causes approximately 2,700 deaths each year in the UK. Their cancer diagnosis and treatment often lead women to experience a range of psychosocial consequences. A literature review was conducted to explore women’s psychosocial needs following hysterectomy for early-stage endometrial cancer. The findings show that women experience significant psychological distress and require supportive care from healthcare professionals, including support in relation to sexual issues. Regular personalised assessments of patients’ psychosocial needs are recommended and should be conducted using validated tools such as holistic needs assessments. Adequate time should be provided during follow-up consultations to discuss patients’ supportive care needs and formulate an individualised care plan. It is essential that patients’ needs in relation to sexual dysfunction are addressed and healthcare professionals may need advanced communication training to enhance their skills and confidence in discussing sexual concerns.
