Modern food packaging technology: Advancements in monitoring food safety and quality: A review

Ensuring a sustainable supply of safe and nutritious food remains a global challenge.Packaging was essential for maintaining food quality, safety and shelf life by preventing contamination, reducing damage, and limiting spoilage.Modern technologies extended beyond traditional passive materials to include active and intelligent features such as antimicrobial agents, oxygen scavengers, tamper-evident designs and embedded sensors. These systems enabled continuous monitoring of freshness and product integrity throughout the supply chain. This review examined advances in intelligent packaging that detect pathogens, allergens and environmental changes, as well as solutions for portion control, resealability and improved consumer communication.Sustainability was emphasized through recyclable, reusable and biodegradable materials that reduced ecological impact.Regulatory considerations, nanomaterial applications and the challenges and opportunities of commercializing innovative packaging were examined.Overall, these developments offered promising strategies to reduce food waste, improve efficiency and meet evolving consumer expectations.
