CORPUS LINGUISTICS AND THE STUDY OF REAL LANGUAGE USE
Corpus linguistics provides a systematic, evidence-based approach to understanding language as it is used in authentic communicative situations. Drawing on representative collections of spoken and written texts, researchers can investigate frequency, collocation, grammatical variation, discourse, and language change. This article reviews the foundational principles of corpus research, explains major analytical methods, and considers applications in language education, lexicography, translation, and discourse studies. It also discusses challenges related to sampling, context, annotation, and ethics. The central argument is that corpus findings are most informative when quantitative patterns are interpreted alongside qualitative evidence and communicative context.
