From page to real life: What John Proctor Is the Villain taught us

In the fall of 2024, I directed a production of “John Proctor Is the Villain” with my high school theatre students. What we did not expect was having our own personal experience with a staff member we trusted who shattered our reality with his alternate life. What started as themes within the play turned into us grappling with our grief and betrayal while also trying to stage the play we worked so hard on.

Abstract

In the fall of 2024, I directed a production of “John Proctor Is the Villain” with my high school theatre students. What we did not expect was having our own personal experience with a staff member we trusted who shattered our reality with his alternate life. What started as themes within the play turned into us grappling with our grief and betrayal while also trying to stage the play we worked so hard on.
