Towards a new age of renting: Reimagining housing geographies beyond generation rent
This paper critically reviews post-2008 housing geographies while reframing the field around the socio-spatial implications and possibilities of enduring housing insecurity. I introduce the new age of renting as a politico-economic conjuncture and demographic shift marked by an ageing and increasingly heterogeneous renter population. Against the logics of homeownership ideology, family-mediated asset-based welfare, and the digital governance of rental markets, I examine trajectories obscured by the generation rent framing as a window onto unfolding, though not inevitable, precarious futures. From this vantage point, I explore how changes in tenants’ social composition create possibilities to challenge housing structures and reimagine futures.
