Selection of Appropriate Tillage Equipment for Different Soil Textures

Soil texture affects tillage performance through its interaction with water content, soil strength, aggregation and compaction. This narrative review synthesizes information on the selection of primary and secondary tillage equipment for sandy, silty, loamy and clayey soils. It presents a qualitative evaluation of the equipment alternatives in terms of residue management, seedbed needs, operating depth, tractor capacity and energy usage. Soils with a large proportion of sand often prefer minimal disturbance and residue retention. Silty soils need protection from crusting, erosion and compaction from traffic. Loamy soils can accommodate a variety of implements, the choice depending on the planned operation and field conditions. Timing for moisture in clayey soils is critical to prevent wet-soil spreading and excessive draft and clod formation in dry circumstances. Deep loosening should be performed only if a restricted compacted layer is found. Soil groups should be used to obtain the requisite seedbed condition with the minimum depth of working, disturbance and mechanical traffic. The studied information shows trade-offs between soil refinement and energy use. Variability in soil parameters and operating conditions precludes direct comparisons and a general ranking of tools cannot be made. The choice of equipment must therefore be determined by the identified restrictions of the field and the agronomic objectives, starting with the soil texture to examine the circumstances of the field in a broader way.
