Biblical Interpretation in a Travel Diary – Egeria’s ‘Itinerarium’
Egeria’s travel diary is drenched with the Scriptures. However, her interpretive methods have been evaluated differently in modern scholarship. To understand Egeria’s notions correctly, it is important to consider the genre of her work – it is a travel diary, not an exegetical commentary or a homily even if it shares some features with both. Therefore, in this article, I take a broader approach than focusing on literal, typological and allegorical interpretation, and examine what the events and practices she describes reveal about her as an author, her views on her addressees, and on her views and uses of the Scriptures.
