The Dual‐Atom Dispersed Catalysts for High‐Performance Li–S Batteries

ABSTRACT Driven by the worldwide shift to clean energy and escalating ecological pressures, there is an urgent demand for sustainable, high‐performance energy storage technologies. Lithium–sulfur batteries are particularly promising because of their exceptional energy density, high theoretical specific capacity, and low material cost. However, practical deployment is severely restricted by the harmful lithium polysulfides shuttle and intrinsically sluggish redox reactions. A viable solution to these obstacles is to introduce catalytic species that accelerate lithium polysulfides conversion. Within this domain, dual‐atom catalysts have drawn immense interest due to their near‐complete atom efficiency, precisely defined coordination spheres, and modifiable electronic characteristics. By supplying plentiful active centers, dual‐atom catalysts strongly anchor lithium polysulfides, lower conversion energy barriers, and boost redox kinetics, ultimately improving sulfur utilization and long‐term cycling durability. This article comprehensively surveys recent breakthroughs regarding dual‐atom catalysts for lithium–sulfur batteries, covering design principles, catalytic mechanisms, and synthetic methodologies, with special attention to the connection among coordination architecture, electronic modulation, and catalytic performance. The review concludes by highlighting key challenges and prospective research directions toward scalable, robust, and cost‐efficient atomically dispersed catalysts, aiming to inform the rational construction of next‐generation high‐performance lithium–sulfur batteries.
