A Lithographed Shiviti-Kamea Printed in Jerusalem, 5664 (1903/04): An Object Study
This note describes a small Jewish protective amulet (kamea) of the shiviti type: a lithographed Hebrew sheet printed in Jerusalem, later set under a clear layer in a hand-cut silver frame with red coral beads and filigree bells. A chronogram on the sheet, "the year of 'Jerusalem the built'" (Psalm 122:3), gives the printing date as 5664, that is 1903/04. The sheet follows the classic Jerusalem layout of the period: the Divine Name at the top with Psalm 16:8 around it, Psalm 36:10 beneath, a menorah formed from Psalm 67 in micrography at the centre, the 42-letter Name flanking it, the 72-letter Name in two side ovals, and two tablet-shaped panels with the standard childbirth and bedtime formulas below. The paper records the object, the reading of each of its twenty zones with an explicit secure/probable flag, the derivation of the date, and the function each element has in the kabbalistic grammar of the amulet. It accompanies an open, bilingual interactive guide to the same object. Interactive guide: kamea-shiviti.netlify.app · Source: github.com/Jossifresben/kamea-shiviti-jerusalem
