Gout: Etiology and Recovery

Gout is a common, increasingly prevalent form of inflammatory arthritis caused by monosodium urate crystal deposition driven by persistent hyperuricemia. While conventional pharmacological therapies effectively manage acute symptoms, they often fail to achieve a permanent cure for chronic or refractory cases. Modern biomedical models focus primarily on metabolic and lifestyle factors, leaving patients with persistent suffering and limited long-term resolution, highlighting a need to explore alternative therapeutic frameworks. This paper investigates an alternative spiritual perspective grounded in the Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door as taught by Dharma Master Jun Hong Lu. Master Lu conceptualizes gout as a karma-related spiritual illness tied to actions such as killing living beings. By examining 3 case presentations, it shows that the application of the Five Golden Buddhist Practices (including making vows, reciting Buddhist scriptures, performing life liberation, reading Buddhism in Plain Terms, repenting of wrongdoings and refraining from doing them) can lead to substantial clinical recovery and pain relief. These results provide new evidence that gout, like many other intractable diseases, has karma and spirit as its deep cause. Only when the karma and spirit are removed from the body can the body completely rid itself of pain.
