Death of an Artist season three: A Rashomon take on a thorny tale
In this review, Siobhán McHugh analyses how disparate elements of a narrative podcast, such as deep personal interviews, archival audio, subtle music and strong sound design, are carefully deployed to create a compelling, shape-shifting series, Death of an Artist, season 3. She interviews co-hosts Leon Neyfakh and Alice Gregory about their process, including the unusual decision to dispense with narration - and reflections on the balance between clarity of meaning and openness of interpretation, and the nuance behind recording their toddler daughter for a podcast about a mutual suicide. The review provides examples of the ways audio producers create meaning through selection of content, sequencing of that content, juxtaposition of elements and pacing.
