Mapa interactivo y análisis geoespaciales de los topónimos indígenas en Costa Rica

This paper, situated within the field of digital humanities, first presents the features of an online interactive map that documents Costa Rican toponyms of indigenous origin. The tool compiles more than 700 entries, including the current name, the type of geographic entity, the language of origin, the original form, the meaning, and the geographic coordinates of each toponym. The map allows for dynamic queries and is continuously updated. Secondly, drawing on the database, geospatial analyses are carried out that reveal patterns of distribution, density, and clustering of the toponyms, taking into account both the language of origin and the type of geographic entity designated. The results show a notable concentration in Talamanca and the Central Valley, as well as smaller clusters in other regions of the country. Regarding linguistic origin, Cabécar toponyms predominate, followed by those from Huetar and Bribri. Overall, the research underscores the importance of indigenous toponyms as an essential part of Costa Rica’s linguistic and cultural heritage, and provides a comprehensive overview of their spatial distribution.
