An Acoustic Analysis of Intonation in English Questions and Its Comparison with Russian

This research examines the intonation patterns of interrogative sentences in English and Russian, focusing on similarities and differences in their acoustic characteristics. The study combines a comparative linguistic approach with acoustic analysis and questionnaire responses collected from 30 participants. It explores how intonation functions in different types of questions and considers learners’ perceptions of differences between English and Russian question intonation. The research aims to develop a better understanding of the role of intonation in spoken communication and the differences between the two languages. By combining theoretical research, acoustic investigation, and survey data, the project examines the topic from both linguistic and practical perspectives. This independent research project was conducted by a Grade 11 student as part of her academic work in English linguistics.
