Opening the "Productive Forces Black Box"

— This paper constructs a causal chain of "threefold structure of consciousness — social relations as intermediary — materialization of thought" to reveal the micro-psychological and social mechanisms of productive forces development, offering a new analytical framework for opening the "productive forces black box" in historical materialism. Marxism regards the contradictory movement between productive forces and relations of production as the fundamental driving force of civilizational development, but the question of "where productive forces themselves come from" has not been fully addressed in macro-level analysis. Based on Marx's classic assertion that "theory, once it grips the masses, also becomes a material force," this paper proposes an explanatory framework with the "threefold structure of consciousness" (sensory consciousness — emotional consciousness — rational consciousness) and the "materialization of thought" as its core categories, and "social relations" as its key intermediary. The core proposition is that, with the mode of material production as the fundamental determinant, the evolution of human consciousness serves as the micro-intermediary link through which productive forces are transformed from potentiality into actual developmental reality. The dynamic imbalance of the body's perceptual existence drives the emergence of sensory consciousness, which is transformed through mental reflection into emotional consciousness and individual developmental needs. These needs are shaped and directed within social relations (while also, in their accumulation, exerting a reciprocal effect on social relations), thereby driving the development of rational consciousness, which guides practical activities to materialize ideas into the products of material and spiritual civilization. This paper argues that extending the inquiry into civilizational dynamics from "productive forces" to the intermediary link of "consciousness" is a mechanism-based supplement to the principle that "consciousness reacts upon matter" within the framework of historical materialism, and also holds theoretical reference value for understanding the practical requirement of "coordinating material and spiritual civilization" in Chinese-style modernization.
