A Comprehensive Defense and Elaboration of the Argument from the Non-Uniformity of Causal Effects
Abstract This paper provides a formal technical defense and structural elaboration of the Argument from the Non-Uniformity of Causal Effects [1] against the Evidential Problem of Evil. While traditional skeptical theism relies on passive, psychological analogies of human cognitive limitations, this framework establishes human epistemic limitations as a structural and mathematical certainty. By mapping historical timelines using a Structural Causal Model (SCM), I demonstrate that localized historical events such as discrete instances of suffering, cannot be surgically extracted from the cosmic web without triggering non-linear chaotic cascades. These cascading force multipliers fundamentally destabilize downstream macro-structures, including regular physical laws and authentic human free agency. Consequently, evaluating whether an alternate, counterfactual universe topology possesses a higher net cosmic value is an incalculable problem for any finite observer. This aggressive epistemic reversal shifts the philosophical burden of proof, demonstrating that the skeptic lacks the requisite epistemic standing to definitively declare any instance of suffering as genuinely gratuitous.
