Returnees Reproducing Hegemony in the Digital Age: Off/Online Attitudes of the Western-born in Vietnam

**This paper has been accepted for publication in Southeast Asia: A Multidisciplinary Journal published by Emerald Publishing Limited** This paper examines how ethnically similar, yet culturally different ethnic return migrants use information communication technologies to reproduce and challenge Western hegemonies in their ancestral homeland. Drawing on 31 online in-depth interviews with 2nd and 2.5 generation Vietnamese living in Viet Nam, from 11 disparate Western countries, it explores the social-cultural, economic, and political (dis)advantages engendered within this hierarchically stratified, multiple-minority coethnic group. Employing Anibal Quijano’s concept of global coloniality, coethnic hierarchies are examined in the ethnic homeland. As such it asks, how are hierarchies among these coethnics played out off/online? To what extent are Western hegemonies reproduced off/online by Western-born ethnic return migrants and what are the tensions within this cohort in off/online groups?
