The Screenshot Society: Digital Permanence, Context Collapse, and Reputational Harm in Adolescent Peer Conflict

Purpose: This article argues for the analytical distinction between digital artifact persistence and peer reputational persistence in adolescent digital conflict. Design/methodology/approach: The paper employs a targeted integrative conceptual synthesis across digital affordances, adolescent peer relations, social evaluation, and adjacent trust-repair scholarship. Findings: It proposes the Captured Conflict–Reputation Pathway (CCRP), a four-quadrant Artifact–Reputation Persistence Matrix, and four unvalidated propositions concerning interpretive transformation, persistence decoupling, reputational feedback, and conditional repair. Originality: The proposed framework separates technical availability, circulation, exposure, and peer evaluation, and identifies potential conditions under which digital and reputational persistence can diverge.

Abstract

Purpose: This article argues for the analytical distinction between digital artifact persistence and peer reputational persistence in adolescent digital conflict. Design/methodology/approach: The paper employs a targeted integrative conceptual synthesis across digital affordances, adolescent peer relations, social evaluation, and adjacent trust-repair scholarship. Findings: It proposes the Captured Conflict–Reputation Pathway (CCRP), a four-quadrant Artifact–Reputation Persistence Matrix, and four unvalidated propositions concerning interpretive transformation, persistence decoupling, reputational feedback, and conditional repair. Originality: The proposed framework separates technical availability, circulation, exposure, and peer evaluation, and identifies potential conditions under which digital and reputational persistence can diverge.
