Possibilities for Fostering Independence of Older People: The Dimension of Dignity in Residential Social Care Institutions

Grounding on the applied qualitative research methods based on theories of humanism and social constructivism, employed semi-structured interview and simulation game “Gamlec”, the article presents an analysis of possibilities for fostering independence in residential social care institutions, emphasises a dimension of dignity and reveals how the interaction of staff, residents and relatives leads to support of independence in the institutional environment. The analysis reveals that respectful communication, assurance of privacy, possibility to participate in the decision-making, acknowledgement of romantic relationships and a positive social climate maintain independence. Several negative factors, such as hyper-care, bullying, lack of privacy and insufficient preparation for palliative care, are pointed out. The research represents a close connection between independence and dignity as well as supplements earlier studies with new insights on the significance of emotional climate, the role of relatives and organisational culture. The results are relevant to practice, enhancement of competencies of staff of care institutions and building of dignity-based care.
