Beyond Marshmallows: An Update of a Previously Reported Interactive In-Class Activity for Learning VSEPR Theory

Abstract Using 3D printing technology, the author chose to update an interactive in-class valence-shell electron-pair repulsion (VSEPR) activity (J. Chem. Educ.2023, 100 (8), 2825–2835.) by designing and 3D printing adjustable model kits that could better represent changes in bond angles when lone pairs were present. To assess this update, the author repeated the activity previously reported, conducted an analysis of questionnaire results, and compared the results to those from the previous study. Analysis of the questionnaire results suggests that, although the updates provided no improvement to the quality of the activity, they did not deteriorate the quality of the activity either, still allowing students to learn and understand VSEPR theory, develop their visuospatial skills, and engage in a constructivist activity.
