Contesting Medical Lawfare in Gaza: Activism and Advocacy of Medics and Medical Organizations

The article focuses on the advocacy efforts of medical professionals and organizations in exposing Israel’s misuse of medical lawfare to justify attacks on healthcare facilities and medical personnel in Gaza. The study analyzes how medics, as part of a broader civil society, use an anti-colonial framework to build solidarity, influence public discourse, and confront the falsehood of invoking medical lawfare to justify mass killings and the destruction of Gaza’s health system. By virtue of their distinct professional credibility and proximity to clinical suffering, medics have made a significant contribution to exposing Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza, amplified the voices of Palestinian healthcare workers, and helped mobilize international solidarity with Palestinians. Thus, medical testimony, as expertise with moral weight, produces distinctive epistemic authority that can contest state-led frames and legal scripts, including those advanced through medical lawfare, a ‘human shielding’ concept attentive to medical spaces. The advocacy carried out by medics has contributed to the collective efforts of Palestinian activists and pro-Palestinian advocates to mobilize international solidarity and facilitate a shift in narrative and public discourse on Palestine and Israel, indicating that a policy shift is plausible with a generational shift of power in the Western political hemisphere.
