The Prevalence and Antibiotic Resistance Patterns among Uropathogenic Klebsiella pneumoniae in Duhok city, Kurdistan region - Iraq
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infectious diseases affecting people of all ages. This research was done to investigate the occurrence of Klebsiella pneumoniae among urinary tract infection patients in Azadi Hospital. And to test their antibiotic susceptibility prescribed by physicians to identify effective antibiotics against them. According to our conventional laboratory techniques 234 samples were cultured to detect positive isolates of K. pneumonia during the period from October 2025 to March 2026. Then Kirby-Bauer test was done for positive cultures. The incidence of K. pneumonia isolated from urine samples was 70 (29.91%) out of 234 samples. According to microscopic examination, all 70 urine samples positive for K. pneumoniae, few epithelial cells and ≥16 pus cells/HPF were the most common finding. While, for RBCs, 0–5 cells/HPF (High-Power Feild) was the predominant category (50/70), followed by ≥16 cells/HPF (11/70). Klebsiella pneumonia had a higher rate of infections in females than those in males with (68.57%) and (31.42%), respectively. Furthermore, 41-50 age group had a higher rate infected with K. pneumonia at (31.42%) among all age groups. Klebsiella pneumoniae was totally sensitive to imipenem (92.85%) while, utterly resistant tetracycline (78.57%).
