Analysis of Required Queue Storage Length for Drive-Through Facilities According to Vehicle Arrival Rate and Service Time

The increasing use of drive-through facilities at coffee shops and fast-food restaurants has raised concerns regarding queue spillback onto adjacent roadways, particularly during periods of high demand. This study analyzes queue characteristics according to vehicle arrival rate and service time and estimates the additional queue storage length required for drive-through facilities.Field surveys were conducted at coffee shops and fast-food restaurants, resulting in average service times of 151 seconds and 306 seconds per vehicle, respectively.Based on the survey results, five vehicle arrival rates ranging from 1.0 to 3.0 vehicles per five minutes were established, and microscopic traffic simulations were conducted using VISSIM.
