ESGOTAMENTO SANITÁRIO DE TERESINA (PI) NA PERSPECTIVA DE CUMPRIMENTO DA META 6.2 DO ODS 6 DA ONU

Brazil's rapid and disorderly urbanization process is characterized by a lack of adequate urban planning and insufficient investment in basic services. In this context, although basic sanitation is recognized as a fundamental human right by the United Nations (UN)—specifically under Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6)—and is supported by the Brazilian legal framework, the country still faces significant deficits in the provision of these services. This reality is particularly evident regarding sewage systems, where only 62.30% of the total population is served by a sewage collection network. This article aims to analyze the evolution of sewage service coverage in Teresina, the capital of the state of Piauí, during the post-sub-concession period. It identifies the key factors that either facilitate or hinder the expansion of these services and the achievement of universal coverage, focusing on Target 6.2, which mandates universal and equitable access to this infrastructure service by 2030. The methodology relies on a review of literature and documents, as well as secondary data from the National Basic Sanitation Information System. The study concludes that, based on current trends, achieving universal sewage coverage in Teresina's urban area by 2030 will not meet the target established in the global agreement.
