Mapping Scientific Research Output at the National Level: A Study of Post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan

This study addresses a research gap on scientific productivity in post-Soviet countries by evaluating Kyrgyzstan’s international scientific output (1991-2023) using a bibliometric approach based on Web of Science and Scopus. Findings show a significant increase in scientific output after 2012, driven by adopted international academic standards and new education laws requiring publications for PhD programs. Medicine and science dominate, with key collaborations involving Russia, Türkiye, and the USA. Theoretically, we recommend exploring local publications and commercialisation of scientific outputs. From a public policy standpoint, the government must finalise reforms in the national system for scientific staff training and certification to bolster national development. This underscores science policy’s role in macroeconomic progress.
