Gender, Citizenship, and Constitutional Rights in Contemporary Classrooms: Its Symbiotic Relations

Gender inequalities continue to significantly shape access to citizenship, rights, and publicparticipation in contemporary democracies. Who is heard, represented, and empowered withincivic spaces is greatly influence by this. The Indian Constitution guarantees equality, dignity, and freedom to all citizens. However, the everyday reproduction of patriarchal norms oftenundermines these ideals in many key institutions of socialization. Schools as an educationalspace can play a positive role in bridging this gap and narrow down unequal gender hierarchies. How social science education can become a democratic space that actively cultivatesconstitutional values and gender-sensitive citizenship is the main focus of this paper. It placedthe National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE 2023) - as crucialframeworks for reimagining classroom practice. These documents provide frameworks thatemphasize upon learner agency, ethical reasoning, and social responsibility, opening uppotential spaces and possibilities for more inclusive pedagogies. The paper argues that genderequality must be learned not merely as abstract or purely cognitive knowledge; but mostimportantly as a lived democratic experience. It draws upon policy documents and case studies- including curricular reforms, teacher education initiatives, and rights-based pedagogicalpractices from classroom practices in India and beyond that encourages dialogue, participation, and critical reflection which strengthens learning resources and capacities of student to engagemore actively with constitutional values. The paper proposes an integrated model ofconstitutional literacy and gender justice education that prepares learners to understand rightsand prepares them to actively practice them within diverse, plural, and unequal social contexts.
