Avaliação da eficácia da toxina botulínica tipo A no manejo da disfunção temporomandibular: uma revisão de literatura

Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of botulinum toxin type A in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders, especially those of muscular origin.Materials and Methods: This is a literature review conducted using PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar databases, including studies published in Portuguese and English. Clinical studies, literature reviews, and experimental research were selected. Results: Botulinum toxin acts by blocking acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, promoting muscle relaxation and pain reduction. Most studies report significant pain improvement, although functional outcomes remain controversial. Conclusion: Botulinum toxin type A is an effective therapeutic alternative for pain control in TMD, especially in refractory cases, and should be used cautiously and in association with other treatments.
