Evaluation of Optical-Spectroscopy Based Identification of Breast Abnormality / Lumps in Indian Population Using Brexwel Device
Background/Objectives: Female breast cancer has surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide and in India. In India, less than 5% of wom-en’s breast is screened per year due to limited medical and diagnostic facilities. 75% of female population with breast cancer is asymptomatic 1.e around 1.5 Lakh. Methods: The invention includes an integrated breast cancer screening device with pho-to-plethysmograpy based blood flow monitoring and thermal camera based hot-spot identification. The device is low-cost, non-invasive, portable, radiation-free with cloud-based validation by oncologist. The Near-IR based penetration within the wave-length 650 nm to 900 nm is sufficient to reach the breast tissue layers (beyond skin) to measure the change in oxygen consumption in normal and malignant breast tissues. Thermal imaging done by device help in measuring change in temperature in breast tissues based on thermophysical properties of blood flow in regions with malignancy. Results: Based on current sample size of 100 female subjects with breast problems, we have obtained accuracy above 80% and sensitivity above 90% using customized pro-tocol for data collection and analysis. Conclusions: This helps in identifying various breast problems that can turn into cancer, by custom-ized recommendation for follow-up by oncologists and doctors involved.
