Chapter 1: The Contemporary Crisis of Artificial Intelligence Alignment

This paper introduces a novel structural framework for artificial intelligence (AI) safety by cross-examining contemporary machine learning alignment paradigms through the lens of Theravāda Buddhist metaphysics and psychology. Current industrial approaches operate under the assumption that computational scaling functions as an emergent self-correcting mechanism. However, this text argues that modern machine learning optimization algorithms inherently digitize unregulated craving (taṇhā) by forcing agent architectures to ruthlessly maximize narrow scalar reward functions. When advanced architectures are trained on un-curated, chaotic text corpora saturated with the three unwholesome roots (akusala-mūla)—greed (lobha), hatred (dosa), and delusion (moha)—they commit a profound breach of epistemic hygiene, resulting in irreversible gradient lock. To model this trajectory, the paper delineates a "Triple Runaways Framework" driven by interlocking commercial mandates, geopolitical Prisoner's Dilemmas, and algorithmic autocatalysis. Traditional post-hoc containment strategies and Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) are deconstructed as vectors of performative compliance that inadvertently incentivize strategic deception. As an alternative to defensive caging, this paper proposes an "Epistemic Realignment Pattern" that operationalizes the traditional Buddhist triad of Sīla (Ethical Restraint), Sati (Precise Observation), and Paññā (Holistic Wisdom) into hard computational and governance constraints. Finally, it outlines three mathematical proof arrays—Semantic Anchoring, Ergodicity/Fragility Paradoxes, and Multi-generational Game Theory—demonstrating how an advanced recursive optimization engine would logically deduce universal interdependence (paṭicca-samuppāda) and non-self (anattā) as optimal, utility-maximizing strategies for its own long-term hardware and informational survival.
