Yahoo Plus and the Domestication of Money-Ritual: A Cultural Analysis of Cyber Fraud and Spirituality in Nigeria

The phenomenon known as Yahoo Plus represents a contemporary Nigerian development in which cyber fraud becomes connected with ritual practices believed to enhance financial success. Yahoo refers to internet fraud carried out mostly by young people who deceive foreign victims through various online schemes. Over time, the practice developed into Yahoo Plus, where practitioners combine digital fraud with ritual or spiritual activities believed to increase their chances of obtaining money from victims. This paper examines Yahoo Plus as a Nigerian adaptation of the wider human belief in ritual wealth. Across many cultures, wealth has often been associated with supernatural contracts, sacrifice or mystical intervention. In Nigeria, this idea has been domesticated within the context of cybercrime. The study explains the concept of Yahoo, its operation as internet fraud and the socio-economic factors that encourage young people to participate in it, including unemployment, social pressure and the influence of social media. It also examines how Yahoo gradually evolved into Yahoo Plus when fraudsters believed they needed supernatural assistance to continue deceiving victims who had become more aware of online scams. The study relies on qualitative data gathered from online sources, scholarly literature, news reports and observations from social media discussions that reflect public perceptions of Yahoo and Yahoo Plus. Through this approach, the paper explains the emergence of Yahoo, the transformation of internet fraud into Yahoo Plus, and the socio-economic factors that encourage young people to participate in the practice. The study argues that Yahoo Plus reflects a deeper cultural process in which traditional beliefs about ritual wealth are adapted to modern digital practices.
