LASHINGS OF LEGITIMACY: THE VCR AS FEMINIST COUNTER-ARCHIVE AND THE POLITICS OF STORYTELLING IN WISE CHILDREN

Angela Carter’s final novel Wise Children (1991) deploys a domestic media technology — the VCR — as a specifically feminist instrument of counter-narration. When Chance sisters control playback of the Lashings of Lolly cassette, they wrest editorial authority over the Hazard dynasty’s official television image and reframe Tiffany’s televised degradation as a tragic arc adapted to the conditions of crude entertainment television. Drawing on Jackson’s Arendtian framework in The Politics of Storytelling: Violence, Transgression, and Intersubjectivity (2013), alongside Bakhtin’s carnivalesque, Williams’s “mobile privatization,” and Gray’s feminist VCR studies this paper argues that the VCR enables what Jackson calls the transformation of private experience into public meaning — a political act in which the mechanical operations of pause, rewind, and replay become instruments of feminist testimony and counter-narration. Carter’s novel, read through Jackson’s development of Arendt’s theory of storytelling, stages the VCR as apparatus of mastery play: a technology through which women denied public legitimacy reclaim narrative agency by remodelling subject-object relations within the space Jackson designates the “subjective-in-between.” Finally, it identifies the novel’s matrilineal chosen family as a counter-dynasty whose narrative authority, secured through Dora’s memoir and the cassette archive, completes the Arendtian movement from private suffering to public record.
