Beyond the Exchange Picture of Singlet–Triplet Gaps
Molecules with inverted singlet-triplet gaps are promising candidates for next-generation organic light-emitting diode emitters, but identifying general principles that explain and guide singlet-triplet inversion remains challenging. Here, we investigate substituted heptazines, vibrational ensembles of azupyrene and isopyrene, and a chemically diverse molecular set using CIS, EOM-CCSD, and wavefunction-based state matching. The CIS analysis reveals an intermediate level of electronic response between direct exchange and correlation: state-specific configuration relaxation redistributes the gap among exchange, orbital-energy, and electron-hole Coulomb contributions. Correlation beyond CIS generally lowers the gap, with a larger reduction associated with greater relative double-excitation character in the singlet. However, the final gap also depends on the positive CIS baseline, so similar doubles content can occur in systems with either positive or negative gaps. Within related molecular datasets, a larger CIS baseline is accompanied by a stronger correlation-driven reduction, but this relationship does not hold across chemically diverse molecules. These findings establish the importance of balancing the full state-specific singles baseline against correlation-driven gap reduction when interpreting and designing singlet-triplet energetics.
