Examining the Intersection of Grief and LGBTQ+ Identities: A Context-Driven Approach
LGBTQ+ individuals experience grief in ways that are often overlooked by traditional models rooted in linear, death-centered frameworks. This article explores the complex, identity-linked losses rooted in systemic oppression, chronic disenfranchisement, and cultural erasure. The Transcending Model of Grief and Loss (TMGL) and its companion tool, the Loss Template, offer a fluid, context-driven framework for understanding and supporting LGBTQ+ grief experiences. A case study illustrates how these tools promote culturally responsive, justice-oriented care. This work challenges the pathologizing of LGBTQ+ grief and affirms its complexity, resilience, and power within counseling practice and education.
