Personal Financial Management Behaviour: A Hybrid Literature Review

This study attempts to perform a blend of bibliometric analysis of 862 Scopus-indexed articles from 2000 to 2025 and a systematic literature review (thematic analysis) of the recent 170 Australian Business Dean’s Council-listed articles to provide both quantitative and qualitative knowledge of personal financial management behaviour (PFMB). The performance analysis is executed to delineate the descriptive structure of the field. Additionally, scientific mapping analysis is executed to perform co-word and co-citation analysis, and five distinct clusters are identified. Thematic analysis is performed on recent articles (2018 onwards) to enumerate six recent research themes ranging from family financial planning to personality-driven financial behaviour. The findings reveal both saturation in traditional areas and promising frontiers, including cryptocurrency adoption, financial stress and the role of spirituality in financial behaviour. This study also provides future research directions by arguing for broadening PFMB beyond the theory of planned behaviour by incorporating alternative perspectives such as resilience and self-determination theory, and by adopting more diverse methodologies, including longitudinal and computational approaches.
