Calculation of range-height indicator (RHI) scan eddy dissipation rate (EDR) map based on Doppler Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) velocity data

An algorithm based on a structure function approach is developed to calculate the Eddy Dissipation Rate (EDR) map from range-height indicator (RHI) scans of short range Light Detection and Ranging (SRLs) at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). With particular consideration on the temporal and spatial resolution of the Doppler velocity data from SRLs as compared with EDR maps from long-range Light Detection and Ranging (LIDARs) already in use at HKIA. The characteristics of such RHI EDR maps is studied in representative cases of building-induced turbulence and terrain-induced turbulence. Quality of the EDR data is established through comparison with numerical model simulation results, EDR maps from long-range LIDARs, as well as a vertical EDR profile from a radar wind profiler. Qualitative comparisons with EDR maps from long-range LIDARs indicate good correlation ( r > 0.7) in cases under consideration. Such maps would have wide-ranging application values for an operating airport. Apart from monitoring low-level turbulence, the EDRs so obtained could be used for establishing correlation with the lifetime of wake vortices from aircraft.
