A new species of Pouteria (Sapotaceae) from Mexico
Pouteria (Chrysophylloideae, Sapotaceae) is a genus with a Neotropical distribution, and 10 species are recognized in Mexico. A new species of section Gayella was discovered during the revision of the Sapotaceae for the Flora of Guerrero. It is morphologically akin to P. subrotata but it differs in the size of the corolla of 2.7‒3.0 mm long (vs. 3.25‒3.5 mm long), staminodes pubescent (vs. glabrate), among other characters. In addition, a map of distribution for the species is included, as well as an identification key for the existing species of Pouteria in Mexico. The preliminary conservation assessment of this new species is Critically Endangered, according to the IUCN Red List categories and criteria.
