오디세이_다시보기_2_바다가_오디세우스를_버린_이유(Odyssey_Revisited_Part2_Why_the_Sea_Abandoned_Odysseus)
Odyssey Revisited Part Two: Why the Sea Abandoned Odysseus offers a speculative historical and political-economic reinterpretation of Homer’s Odyssey. Rather than treating Odysseus’s ten-year absence solely as a sequence of supernatural trials, it asks whether the epic preserves transformed memories of a postwar conflict between Odysseus and the maritime commercial networks that had supplied ships, capital, provisions, and intelligence during the Trojan War. Building on Part One’s interpretation of Menelaus’s prosperous eight-year voyage as a process of postwar settlement, this essay contrasts Odysseus’s catastrophic return. It reconsiders the raid on the Cicones as an attempt to settle obligations with lower-value spoils while retaining elite Trojan booty; Agamemnon’s possible double game; recurring storms as memories of interception and forced rerouting; monsters as mythologized local communities; and repeated crew disobedience as evidence of disputes over booty, desertion, or defection. Circe and Calypso are reread as custodians of a defeated commander under political confinement, while Athena, Telemachus, Menelaus, and the Phaeacians form a network that eventually enables Odysseus’s covert return and negotiated restoration in Ithaca. His account at the Phaeacian court is thus read not only as an adventure narrative but also as a self-defense statement addressed to those able to finance and authorize his return. The essay does not claim to prove a hidden historical record. It is a historical thought experiment that rearranges the epic’s events around war finance, maritime power, exile, and political bargaining. It concludes by opening a further question: whether the repeated role of women in confining, releasing, receiving, and legitimizing Odysseus preserves traces of a female-mediated system of kingship.
