Enhancing Conflict Resolution Skills Through Social Studies Instruction in Secondary Schools in Imo State

The study investigated the influence of Social Studies instruction on the development of conflict resolution skills among secondary school students in Imo State, Nigeria. The study was prompted by the increasing need to equip learners with the social and emotional competencies necessary for managing interpersonal and group conflicts in a diverse and dynamic society. Two research questions and two corresponding hypotheses guided the study. A survey research design was adopted, and data were collected from 288 Junior Secondary School (JSS 2) students selected from public secondary schools across Owerri and Orlu education zones using a multi-stage sampling procedure. The instrument for data collection was a researcher-developed questionnaire titled Social Studies Instruction and Conflict Resolution Skills Questionnaire (SSICRSQ), structured on a four-point Likert scale and validated by experts, with a reliability coefficient of 0.86. Data were analysed using mean, standard deviation, and an independent samples t-test for the hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that Social Studies instruction positively influences students’ development of conflict resolution skills (overall mean = 2.94), enabling them to understand the causes of conflicts, develop tolerance, and cultivate cooperation and teamwork. Similarly, Social Studies instructional methods were found to enhance students’ ability to manage and resolve conflicts peacefully (overall mean = 2.93), particularly through participatory, discussion-based, and cooperative learning approaches. The t-test results indicated no significant difference between male and female students in their mean ratings on both variables, suggesting that Social Studies instruction contributes equally to conflict resolution competence across genders. The study concludes that Social Studies serves as an effective instrument for promoting peace education, empathy, and harmonious living among learners in Imo State. It recommends that teachers adopt participatory and experiential pedagogies, such as role-playing, group discussions, and simulations to further strengthen students’ conflict resolution and peacebuilding capacities.
