From the history of classical education in Western Siberia: senior teacher of the Main Public School of Tobolsk Timofey Mikhailovich Voskresensky (1766–1815)
This article explores the professional biography of T. M. Voskresensky, a graduate of the Trinity (Lavra) Theological Seminary and the St. Petersburg Teachers' Seminary, and one of the first four teachers at the Main Public School in the Siberian provincial city of Tobolsk in the last quarter of the 18th century. Drawing on archival data, including data introduced into scholarly circulation for the first time, the author reconstructs the main biographical details, professional, and personal characteristics of this senior teacher at the Main Public School in Tobolsk, which was transformed into the first classical gymnasium in Western Siberia in the early 19th century. Voskresensky's life journey provides insight into the development of the professional teaching environment during the development of secondary education in Western Siberia, as well as the teachers' interactions with the Siberian and Moscow administrations that oversaw public education in Russia, and their interactions with Siberian society. The article notes the teacher's personal contribution to the establishment of public education institutions in Siberia at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
