Using an Intervention Package to Increase Appropriate Responding to Patterned-Behavior Description Interview Questions for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disability
Background Integrated employment is a key component of a high quality of life. However, gaining employment continues to be a challenge for many individuals with a diagnosed intellectual and/or developmental disability. One of the barriers to gaining employment is the job interview process. Employers often use Patterned-Behavior Description Interview (PBDI) questions during the interview process to determine likely future behavior based on patterns of past behavior. Objective This pilot study uses a remotely-mediated intervention package consisting of a video model, mnemonic visual, and guided practice, to target increases in appropriate responding to PBDI questions in a mock interview among adults with a primary diagnosis of intellectual disability (ID). Method A nonconcurrent multiple-baseline design across participants was used to determine the effects of a remotely mediated intervention package consisting of a video model, mnemonic visual, and guided practice to teach the Challenge-Action-Result (CAR) strategy for answering PBDI questions during a mock job interview. Results All participants demonstrated increased responding to PBDI questions after the intervention was introduced. Conclusion The findings indicate that a remotely delivered instructional package consisting of video modeling, a visual mnemonic, and guided practice may be an effective approach for improving responses to PBDI questions among young adults with IDD.
