The Wooden Coffins Dating from the Old Kingdom and the First Intermediate Period Preserved at the Museo Egizio in Turin: A Comprehensive Study

Egyptian wooden coffins have been the subject of particular attention in Egyptology since the early days of the discipline. Undoubtedly because of the presence of funerary texts and formulae, which have always been of far greater interest to researchers than the medium itself, it is mainly the coffins dating from the Middle and New Kingdoms that have been the focus of this study, leaving aside both older coffins and anepigraphic coffins, long considered to be of no major interest. The objective of the Ancient Egyptian Burial Containers Project led by M. P. Hlouchová and V. Nováková (Charles University, Prague) is to scrutinise all types of burial containers from the Old Kingdom and First Intermediate Period (stone, wood, reed, and pottery) from localities all over Egypt. The comprehensive study of nine wooden coffins preserved at the Museo Egizio in Turin from this period is part of this project.
