A pair of short stories from Parallax · Twin Tales, which stage one real dilemma twice: Here, in the world as it is, with invented people in real places; There, in the world of Vision Come True, a future that split from ours in 2024 and never emerged. This pair belongs with the twentieth essay of Brainstorming with the Enemy, The Ladder and the Loop, and stages its question on water: what happens to a skill that lives in one person's ears when machines arrive to read the water instead. Here, on 10 October 2026, a commune's new water app records a walk along an irrigation channel in the Valais. Its keeper of forty-one seasons hears that the wooden hammer driven by the current knocks too slowly, while three new sensors read everything within limits; he finds the leak by ear, cannot say how he knows, and learns that there is no line for him in the budget, since the hammer is on a heritage list and its listener is not. A young engineer adds a button and a first entry, and agrees to walk with him for nothing. There, in November 2052, a dam listener who works four hours a day in the galleries of the Fourth Dam of the Pearly Lakes and studies two hears a beat in the dam's low hum that its own monitoring machine had learned as normal. Readings from three other lineages agree, the alarm sounds for that dam only, the fault is cleared the same afternoon, the machine learns the new sound, the clearing pays those who heard it, and he takes two students into the gallery to listen. Abstract
