Wound Dressings for the Treatment of Diabetic Wounds: A Brief Review of Modern Approaches and Clinical Perspectives
Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major global health concern, with its prevalence projected to increase significantly in the coming decades. One of the most severe complications of DM is the development of chronic wounds, particularly diabetic foot ulcers, which contribute substantially to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Effective wound management is essential to mitigate these impacts, and wound dressings play a central role in promoting proper healing. This review provides a brief overview of the general status of wound dressings used for diabetic wound care, highlighting the evolution from traditional dressings to modern, bioactive alternatives. Key polymeric materials and strategies incorporated into current dressings are discussed, including hydrocolloids, hydrogels, alginates, and nanomaterials. The review also addresses critical challenges, such as the high cost and limited accessibility of advanced dressings in low- and middle-income countries, as well as emerging innovations like smart dressings with embedded sensors and 3D bioprinting technologies. Future efforts must focus on improving the efficacy, affordability, and availability of advanced wound care solutions to meet the growing global burden of diabetic wounds.
