Organic Synthesis as a Scientific Method

Examples from our group on the use of organic synthesis as a scientific method are presented. Challenges regarding the constitution and configuration of natural products, their biological activity, the feasibility of biosynthetic transformations, the role of putative intermediates in biosynthetic pathways, and the role of substituents in toxic compounds have been investigated by the preparation of synthetic natural products and their derivatives.
