Risk and Crisis Management: The Interplay of the role of management and the employees in Nigeria work environment
Abstract This study examines the interplay between management and employees in risk and crisis management within Nigerian organizations. Risk, defined as any threat to organizational survival, often escalates into crisis when not properly managed. Using focus group discussions across three groups, the research reveals that Nigerian organizations largely adopt reactive rather than proactive approaches to risk management. Group A emphasized weak risk assessment systems and the importance of communication in reducing panic and misinformation. Group B highlighted poor management structures, lack of reputation management, and the need for employees to detect and report risks early. Group C identified operational, financial, and security risks, stressing management’s role in strategic planning, transparency, and resource allocation, while employees were seen as the first line of defense. Across all groups, communication, cooperation, and proactive strategies emerged as critical to effective risk and crisis management. The study concludes that hybrid models combining indigenous practices with modern frameworks offer sustainable solutions for Nigeria’s complex organizational crises.
