Mechanical Structure Design and Simulation Analysis of a Dual-Axis Solar Tracking System

This paper presents the mechanical design and static structural assessment of a gear driven dual axis solar tracking system. Independent azimuth and elevation mechanisms are used to orient the photovoltaic module, while a compact gear train transfers motor torque through the support structure to the base. A three dimensional model is developed in SolidWorks, and the upper support is evaluated with a finite element model whose material properties, restraints and loads follow the actual mounting arrangement. Panel self weight is examined as a baseline condition, and a second case introduces natural wind loading. Von Mises stress, total deformation and factor of safety are used to evaluate structural performance. The baseline solution shows small stress and displacement, and the combined case is defined as the main condition for final strength verification and design refinement.
