Starving for Democracy: The 1979 Hunger Strike and the Meanings of Amnesty in Brazil
This article chronicles a month-long hunger strike in 1979 of political prisoners in Brazil. As politicians debated an official amnesty project, the hunger strike demanded that amnesty be granted to a broader category of persecuted individuals. By recasting themselves as political actors rather than subversives, the hunger strikers challenged the contours of political legitimacy at a pivotal moment in Brazil’s transition away from military rule. Revisiting the history of the 1979 hunger strike can help assemble a more complete understanding of the meanings of amnesty in Brazil.
